On The Arts: Safire's Speech About the Arts and Brain Function

The Dana Foundation recently announced the publishing of a major report on the effects of arts training on brain function. While the report findings were announced on March 4, 2008 (attendees at the California Arts Council statewide conference were some of the first to see it), Dana Foundation Chair William Safire informed audiences of the study in 2006. Take a look at the California Arts Council wrap-up of Safire's speech from 2006 to learn more about this important study.

California Arts Council seeks images of California arts for website

The California Arts Council not only has new content and features available on the recently revised website, but we've got a completely new design as well -- design that prominently features revolving photos of the arts in California on the home page. We'd like to feature arts organizations throughout the state in this spot.

Don't Lose Nonprofit Status
New Tax Requirements for Small Nonprofits

Starting in 2008 for annual year 2007, all nonprofits have to file some kind of documentation with the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Nonprofit organizations that do not file Form 990 (or the simplified versions of this form) for three consecutive years may lose their 501(c) status. This includes the small organizations that have less than $25,000 in their coffers.

California Story Slam Expands to High Schools in 22 Counties
June 2 deadline for California Arts Council's writing contest for high school juniors

High school juniors from 22 select counties around the state are invited to participate in the "My California Story Slam," a pilot-project writing competition that encourages students to use the knowledge of their lives and emotional journeys to create literature. American Masterpieces-California: Upcoming Performances
Festive music from California's Hispanic-Mexican Era

The California Arts Council takes great pleasure in offering the second set of tours for American Masterpieces-California, a statewide initiative for the citizens of California. This particular part of the American Masterpieces-California initiative is titled "Musica Festiva de las Misiones (Festive Music of the Missions), music from the California's Hispanic-Mexican Era." NEW DEADLINE for state poet nominations!
Monday May 19 is new deadline for California Poet Laureate applications

The California Arts Council has extended the deadline for nominations for California Poet Laureate to Monday, May 19, so get your nominations in ASAP for the officially recognized poet for the state.  Self-nominations are accepted. Click more for details.

Healthy Advice about Health Insurance for Artists
Helpful information from the Health Insurance Resource Center, created by The Actors Fund

Health insurance is an important topic to many artists and others employed in the creative industries. The California Arts Council has an informational web page about the topic with some basic facts and resources (see Arts Info), and this week we've also welcomed the nonprofit Health Insurance Resource Center's Dan Kitowski to explain how his organization can help.

California Imagination PSA released on Arts Council Website
See the collective project from over 250 California artists and organizations

California Imagination, a public-service announcement from the California Arts Council, launched on YouTube and the state agency's website at 11 am on Thursday. The PSA is a collaborative effort between the California Arts Council, California artist Jillian Kogan, and approximately 250 arts organizations and artists throughout California.
