California Story Slam

High school juniors from select counties around the state are invited to participate in the My California Story Slam, a pilot-project writing competition that encourages students to use the knowledge of their lives and emotional journeys to create literature. The competition is made possible through funds from the sales of My California: Journeys by Great Writers, a fundraising project for California Arts Council literature programs for kids.

California High School Juniors from the following counties are eligible to apply for the 2008 My California Story Slam pilot project: Alameda, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Humboldt, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Nevada, Placer, Riverside, Santa Clara, Sacramento, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Siskiyou, Sonoma, Tuolumne, Ventura, and Yuba.

High school juniors during the 2007-08 school year from the counties above are directed to write an essay or story that expresses an event or time in their lives when all their emotions were clear to them -- a time when the student thought, 'I need to remember this.' Entries may be "glory stories," meaningful realizations, painful experiences or loving ones. The entries will be first judged on their ability to evoke the moment of a personal experience and a sense of meaning or depth of feeling, and then reviewed for personal style. Due date: Deadline Passed.

Eligible entries must be no longer than 800 words, and only one story per student. The competition has specific formatting and application requirements -- please see the Story Slam Guidelines and the Story Slam Online Submission Form for more details. Each winner will receive a $500 monetary award, and each winner's school will receive $500 for the school library. Also, winners will be asked to accept awards at a public meeting and allow their stories to be used by the California Arts Council and its designees for promotion and publishing.

Questions should be addressed to California Arts Council Arts Specialist Kristin Margolis at .
