About the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center
Alameda County's Juvenile Justice Center opened in early 2007 and brings state-of-the-art facilities to the County's juvenile detention and courts programs, and enables fundamental changes in the way the County works with young people and their families. The Alameda County Arts Commission manages the public art program at the Center. The program has a prominent role within the Center, helps create a positive and supportive environment, and has three main components: a diverse group of site-specific permanent artworks placed throughout the building; framed wall-mounted artworks created by Alameda County artists; and a new arts education program. The arts program encourages collaboration while recognizing the power artistic creation can have in producing an uplifting environment in a facility serving young people in crisis.
The mission of the California Arts Council, a state agency, is to advance California through the Arts and Creativity. Members of the California Arts Council include: Chair Michael Alexander, Vice Chair Malissa Feruzzi Shriver, Eunice David, Charmaine Jefferson, Chong-Moon Lee, Fred Sands, Karen Skelton, Susan Steinhauser and William Turner.
