Artist Call Detail

Art of Peace
For SF Bay Area artists

This is an Open call for art proposals from the Bay Area community.

The theme of the show is “Art of Peace: Transformation.” Using disabled gun components, artists will create works across a variety of media culminating in a traveling exhibit to raise awareness of gun violence. Applications are requested from the fields of 3-dimensional sculpture, 2-dimensional mixed media / wall art, and small works. Background: The nonprofit Robby Poblete Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), was created by Pati Poblete in honor of her son, who was shot and killed in broad daylight in Vallejo, CA, on Sept. 21, 2014. He was 23 years old. At the time of his death, Robby was working with his father and learning how to weld. It was a skill that he was so passionate about that he had already begun plans to start his own weld shop. His tragic death prevented him from ever doing so. The Robby Poblete Foundation was created to address the issue of gun violence by collecting unwanted weapons through annual gun buybacks, and transforming them into tools of hope and opportunity.

The foundation’s programs include “The Art of Peace”, which takes the materials from the destroyed guns and works with local artists to transform them into pieces of art, and support of vocational programs to give young people working skills.. The foundation’s mission is to not merely to destroy guns, but to give them new life -- to have them represent beauty and the human spirit, rather than violence and fear. These pieces will be featured in a traveling exhibit to raise awareness about gun violence, placed as monuments in public places, and potentially sold for fundraising at an art exhibit and auction.

MISSION STATEMENT: The Art of Peace intends to transform unwanted firearms into weapons of hope and opportunity.
