Marketing and Communications Manager
San Luis Obispo Symphony

For over 50 years, the San Luis Obispo Symphony has enhanced the county’s cultural landscape across the county. The orchestra's Classics in the Cohan series is an anchor for the city's state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center. The chamber series takes place in the region's many scenic communities. Special occasion pops concerts augment celebrations for people of all ages far and wide. Hundreds of school children attend free concerts that introduce them to orchestral music as part of the Performing Arts Center's Matinee program. The San Luis Obispo Symphony's Youth Orchestra builds the foundation for a lifelong involvement in music, starting with ensembles for very young players -- Super Bows -- and progressing through the intermediate Preparatory Strings and Academy String Orchestra. The most advanced ensembles are Symphonic Winds and Concert Orchestra, which claims notable alumni, including musicians that now play in the San Luis Obispo Symphony. Encounters with classical music and instruments are accessible for everyone with the Symphony's traveling petting zoo and music van. Boosting classroom education, San Luis Obispo Symphony-trained teachers provide after-school beginning string programs for kids where music education is in short supply during the school day. To ensure strong and thorough marketing and publicity that ensures ticket and earned revenue goals are met, as well as to ensure high quality communication with constituents involved in the many activities of the organization, the San Luis Obispo Symphony is seeking a marketing and communications manager.  

Primary to this position is aggressively growing the subscription base for five classical concerts. To accomplish a goal of a hall that is 75% subscribed the Orchestra has a goal of growing the subscription base by 175 households in the coming seasons.  This will be accomplished by a relentless focus on the proven fundamentals of subscription marketing – direct mail and telemarketing.   The marketing and communications director should be comfortable with undertaking this work or be willing to learn in collaboration with our marketing consultant.   

In general, the position is responsible for marketing and communications associated with single ticket and subscription sales and responsible for promotion to press and to patrons. To that end the marketing and communications manager develops strategies for expanding the subscriber base and individual ticket sales, executes marketing and advertising efforts, and meets or exceeds sales and attendance goals. He or she cultivates and maximizes sales of tickets to prospective individuals and groups such as corporations, schools, churches and business associations. He or she is able to stay within budget, and track effectiveness of efforts compared to cost. He or she is master of mailing lists – snail and electronic – and well as a sleuthhound when it comes to tracking buyer behavior. The position is key in implementing and using a new database. He or she manages and contributes to the website and uses social media to promote ticket sales. 

The marketing and communications manager fulfills media requests and actively seeks coverage for the full spectrum of the organization’s activities. He or she seeks out, schedules and manages speaking engagements or other publicity opportunities for the music director and executive director. The position is involved as needed in fundraising activities such as the annual gala, and music education communications needs. 

The marketing and communications manager coordinates and ensures the accuracy and quality of many, varied publications. Providing creative content, he or she writes or edits copy, oversees design, production, placement, and fulfillment for brochures, print and e- newsletters, print and online ads, radio ads, television ads, print and e- postcards, website, press releases, biographies and other program booklet materials, and posters. He or she may contribute to or manage grants, especially grants supporting advertising. 

The marketing and communications manager uses consistent messaging, focuses on impact and creates a constant flow of good news to help build customer and donor loyalty. He or she creates templates in Microsoft Office programs to help other Symphony staff carry out consistent branding. This is a renaissance position – the marketing and communications manager is responsible for projects from start to finish – from initial creative to making sure brochures are in racks around town, from creating the sponsor acknowledgement slide show to running it at concerts. The position engages a marketing committee to provide input on big picture, guiding concepts and on smaller-scale initiatives as needed. In addition, he or she is expected to work with a marketing consultant as needed.

The position reports to the Executive Director.

This is a full time, hourly position with varying hours and occasional evening and weekend work during the Symphony season.

Qualifications:
The marketing and communications manager must have superb communication skills, both written and oral. A bachelor’s degree and/or at least two years relevant experience is required. Experience with software including an email promotion program, a design program, a photo editing program, a website editing program, a database, a CRM, Microsoft Office Publisher, Powerpoint, Word, and Excel, and social media will be fundamental to carrying out duties. 

Successful candidates will show the ability to save time and money while meeting goals, as well as strong organizational, trouble shooting and problem solving abilities. We will look for the ability to take direction throughout a project while also being able to take initiative. Patience, a sense of humor, and team spirit are essentials in our office.
