Vice President of Education and Community Engagement
Philharmonic Society of Orange County

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County seeks a Vice President of Education and Community Engagement to provide leadership for its nationally recognized Youth Music Programs and for its educational and engagement programs for college students and lifelong learners. The Youth Music Programs are school-based and free of charge and reached 162,000 K-12 students in Orange County during the 2016-17 academic year, 64% of them from Title I schools. They employ professional teaching artists, musicians, and student performers and are supported by the work of 700+ volunteers from the Philharmonic Committees, the volunteer and fundraising auxiliary for our Youth Music Programs. The Philharmonic Society seeks a dynamic, visionary leader to ensure that our programs serve the maximum number of people possible, are of the highest quality, and reflect the latest thinking related to curriculum development and audience engagement. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, with a major in music education, education, and/or music preferred
  • Experience working in arts education, in a non-profit and/or school environment
  • Experience working with volunteers; strong people skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; effective ambassador and advocate for the arts
  • Commitment to strategies that foster diversity and inclusion in the arts
  • Strong leadership, management, and relationship-building skills
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office

Responsibilities:              

  • Full responsibility for all the youth and adult education programs of the Philharmonic Society, including planning and implementation
    • Ensure that programs adhere to current curricular standards; develop and update programs as appropriate
    • Work collaboratively with district level VAPA coordinators, Orange County Department of Education, and Orange County Music and Art Administrators to ensure optimal program delivery and performance
    • Create and manage annual budget, in partnership with Philharmonic Committees leadership
    • Engage musicians and teaching artists as required
    • Identify and secure appropriate venues for programs; work with stakeholders on concert production
    • Create or supervise the creation of teaching materials and teaching CDs
    • Attend youth concerts as manager, working volunteer duties if needed
    • Work with The Committees and outside organizations on arts advocacy
    • Keep current on local and national music education programming by other organizations
  • Report on education activities to The Committees leadership, including meeting with executive board,  board of directors and finance committee monthly
  • Work with volunteer chairmen of youth programs and concerts to produce programs
    • Select appropriate dates and locations
    • Produce enrollment materials, reports and labels for youth programs
    • Evaluate youth programs annually
    • Work with Director of Volunteer Services to obtain venue, volunteer, and auto insurance, coordinate meetings, and volunteer needs
  • Represent the education department of the Philharmonic Society at meetings of Committees, and with community organizations, county-wide educational institutions, and education groups
  • Write grant applications to support the Philharmonic Society’s education programs; administer grants, including maintaining and updating a schedule of grantors and submitting reports and payment requests
  • Other duties as assigned
