The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University invites curators/educators to apply for the position of Gallery Director.  This special faculty[*] position is an uncommon opportunity for an individual who is committed to the field of art and cultural progress to lead a contemporary art gallery within a fine arts college of nationally ranked schools in one of the most respected research universities in the world.

We see this as a highly specialized, hands-on position that requires an essential understanding of contemporary arts and culture, and the collaborative and communication skills to work effectively across disciplines and to build consensus towards a distinctive intellectual vision for the Miller Gallery.  You also should have initiative, be passionate about arts advocacy, be fluent in contemporary arts discourse, have experience in fundraising, and be able to work in collaborative and dynamic ways with a diverse group of faculty, students and staff.

We are especially interested in candidates who share a love for progressive ideas across the arts and sciences, who value working within the broader academic community, and who view art as knowledge and as an indispensable arm of free thought and direct social engagement.  

The Miller Gallery, a three-story, 7,000-square-foot exhibition space located on Carnegie Mellon’s main campus, is integral to the vision of the College of Fine Arts, and helps to promote this vision by engaging primarily, though not exclusively, with its five schools: Architecture, Art, Drama, Design, and Music.  Our mission includes explorations of new forms, dynamic relationships between art and hybrid practices, and relevant histories and speculative visions of art, technology, and culture on and across regional and international spectrums.

As an artistic hub within a dynamic and diverse community, we foster experimental practices across the arts and design that expand our notion of culture by facilitating conversations related to free expression, expanded practices, innovation, and pedagogy.  Charged with generating and sponsoring a yearly series of exhibitions, performances and programming, you will be expected to consider the educational needs and goals of the arts and design domains at Carnegie Mellon as well as actively engage with students, faculty, artists, scholars, alumni, and the public.

The director is a salaried, 12-month position reporting to the dean of the College of Fine Arts and also is a member of the faculty of the School of Art, teaching at least one course annually. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and maintain a dynamic vision for the Miller Gallery working with the dean of the College of Fine Arts, head of the School of Art, and gallery advisory board.
  • Model a collaborative, open forum across various interests groups and diverse populations within the university, across the region, and on the international stage.
  • Create interdisciplinary programming that serves the pedagogical, research and outreach interests of the college and the university.
  • Work with faculty across the university to integrate Miller Gallery programming (exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops, lectures, etc.) into academic coursework.
  • In collaboration with university and college fundraising staff, lead the effort to generate contributed income for the Miller Gallery from private, public and governmental sources.
  • Develop and teach a course related to contemporary exhibition theory and practice or a particular area of interest
  • Maintain a dynamic media presence to promote the Miller Gallery.
  • Function as a connection point for the College of Fine Arts, the broader university, the Pittsburgh region, and national and international arts and design communities.
  • Manage budgets for the Miller Gallery.
  • Supervise staff: assistant director, exhibitions coordinator/facilities manager, student gallery assistants, exhibition technician, and others as needed.
  • Serve on the university’s Public Art Committee and manage the university’s public art works.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of MFA in Visual Arts, MA in Museum/Curatorial Studies, MA in Art History/Museum Management/Administration or equivalent.
  • Record of experience having successfully generating contributed income from private, public, corporate, governmental and foundation sources.
  • Three-to-five years of experience in museum or gallery curation or programming, and a scholarly and technical understanding of both contemporary art and institutional management or the equivalent.  Candidates with a full range of experience (handling art, contracting exhibitions, museum/academic gallery administration, and managerial experience) strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a teacher in formal or informal environments, including course-building/structuring and objective-setting skills, and trans- and meta-curricular program development skills.
  • Knowledge of and hands-on experience with the practical processes of supporting exhibitions from proposal to de-installation is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and produce exhibition publications, gallery text, and promotional materials.
