Job Title: Marketing and Grants Intern Hours: 40 hours/week

Compensation: $4,800 stipend ($12 an hour or $480 per week) for the 10 week internship

Application Deadline: April 30, 2017, 11:59 p.m.

Dates of Internship: June 5–August 11, 2017

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate college students (two- or four-year) who reside or attend college in Los Angeles County. Students must have completed at least one semester of college by June 1, 2016, or will complete their undergraduate degree between May 1–September 1, 2017. Students who have already earned a BA, BS or a higher degree are ineligible, as are students who have previously participated in the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program.

Position Description: Summertime is when the Arts Council for Long Beach reviews applications for our three large annual grants: Professional Artist Fellowships, Community Project Grants and Operational Grants. We receive applications, convene community panels that vote on the recipients and decide who will receive the grants. This process entails a large amount of work, and it is one of the most important functions of the Arts Council. Our summer 2017 interns are integral to this process and participate in every aspect from start to finish, including reading applications and attending panels. This is a wonderful learning opportunity about annual grant making. The intern will also have the opportunity to attend monthly allocations meetings and assist with our monthly microgrants.

The Marketing and Grants intern will also be integral in assisting with and learning about our marketing initiatives. Through our website, e-newsletters, social media, events, programs and outreach, the Arts Council promotes Long Beach arts and culture to Long Beach audiences and visitors and connects local artists and arts organizations with opportunities. The intern will help keep our website pages up-to-date, including our event calendar, arts map, artist registry, artist calls, artist residencies and other pages as needed. S/he will also update our email database for our enewsletter and assist with small research projects as needed.

Interns are an integral part of our team and participate in all staff meetings. They are also invited to attend a board meeting to meet and be introduced to the board of directors. Through these experiences, the Intern will gain a greater understanding of how the arts play a major role in the Arts Council’s interactions with the community.

Qualifications:

  • An interest in marketing, arts management and/or fundraising
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel (Adobe Creative Suite a plus but not required)
  • Familiarity with WordPress and MailChimp (a plus but not required)
  • Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Great research skills
  • An ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Willingness to take the lead on certain projects and report progress to the Marketing and Grants Manager

Submit a resume, cover letter outlining qualifications, and two references.

All college students regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation or disability who meet the above criteria are eligible to apply.

This internship is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. 132 undergraduate interns will participate in the program this year at more than 100 performing, presenting and literary nonprofit arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout LA County. In addition to their full-time 10 week paid internship, interns will participate in educational events as part of the program, which is funded by the Getty Foundation. The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County.
