The California Arts Council will be requiring all applicants to fill out a profile through the California Cultural Data Project and submit a supplementary form along with your application. In conjunction with the Department of Justice, the California Arts Council is making available a one-time grant up to $15,000 to presenting organizations to offer discounted or free music performances that will serve California’s underserved, rural and/or inner-city populations. (Currently Accepting Applications!)
The Artists in Schools program supports artists in residency activities taking place in schools, both in the classroom and in after-school settings. All residencies must be a partnership between a school and a non-profit arts organization.
Creating Public Value supports small California arts organizations in rural or underserved areas in implementing projects designed to make a positive contribution to communities utilizing tools identified as The Three R's: Relationships (building partnerships), Relevance (to audiences and community), and Return on Investment (making the case to the authorizing environment).
Support for local arts agencies designated by County Boards of Supervisors to develop and sustain the arts and culture of local communities.
Support for culturally-specific, multicultural, and discipline-based arts networks and service organizations to strengthen constituencies and promote the public value of the arts in communities. (through organizational capacity and community building)
Special Initiatives
American Masterpieces: Artistic Legacy of California Indian Basketry exhibition will open at The California Museum on March 14, 2009. This exhibit of over 80 California Indian baskets from the vast collection held by California State Parks, will be on display through early 2010. Many of these exquisite baskets will be on public view for the first time.
.The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with the State Arts Agencies of the United States, including the California Arts Council, to create Poetry Out Loud. This program encourages high school students statewide to memorize and perform poems of celebrated authors by inviting the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into classrooms. Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.
High school juniors from select counties around the state are invited to participate in the My California Story Slam, a pilot-project writing competition that encourages students to use the knowledge of their lives and emotional journeys to create literature. The competition is made possible through funds from the sales of My California: Journeys by Great Writers, a fundraising project for California Arts Council literature programs for kids
The California Arts Council offers technical assistance in a variety of forms. Technical assistance funds are used to support development opportunities and activities that bring the Arts to the broadest constituency.
- The California Arts Council partners with national services organizations, individual consultants and other technical assistance providers to conduct organizational needs assessments and cultural resource surveys to assist in strengthening the infrastructure of local arts agencies.
- The agency continues its partnership with the National Arts and Disabilities Center (centered at UCLA) which includes support of the Arts and Accessibility Technical Assistance Grant Program.
- California Arts Council staff travels the state conducting program guideline workshops and consultations to applicants and grantees and is available for assistance on a daily basis via phone, email or at the California Arts Council offices.
- The California Arts Council has provided scholarships and/or travel assistance to conferences including the 2006 California Alliance for Arts Education conference, the 2007 conference of The Association of American Cultures and the California Arts Council’s 2007 and 2008 statewide conferences.
